"Destiny Of The Daleks" is one of the best classic Who episodes, while "Planet Of Evil" is a forgettable yarn.

The stories: “Destiny Of The Daleks” finds the Doctor and Romana II on Skaro where they discover that the Daleks are searching for Davros. Meanwhile, the Doctor learns that another species named the Movellans are also on Skaro, but what are they doing there?

“Planet Of Evil” sees the Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith answering a distress call from a geological expedition on the planet Zeta Minor only to come across a murderous anti-matter creature.

While some fans are critical of ‘Daleks,’ I find it to be one of the most exciting adventures of the classic series. It has everything a fan could want from a Who story. K-9, Tom Baker at his best, a newly regenerated Romana, Davros, oddball humor, explosions galore, an intriguing story of the Daleks inability to understand irrational thought, and some impressive location shooting to boot. It just doesn’t get any better than this.

After far too many Earth bound adventures in the Pertwee years, it was refreshing to see a fully realized alien planet in “Planet Of Evil.” Unfortunately, the elaborate and detailed jungle and swamp sets for the Zeta Minor planet are about all this episode has going for it. For the most part, this story barely has the Doctor in it at all. Most of the episode is spent on the frightfully dull military Morestra crew arguing amongst themselves or the absurd Anti-Man! On top of that, there’s an anti-matter creature that is a complete rip-off of the ID beast in “Forbidden Planet.” Mediocre at best.

Planet Of Evil Extras:

* Continuities, photo gallery, info text, Radio Times Listings, trailer for “Destiny Of The Daleks,” and studio scene.

* “Planetary Performance”- A 13 ½ minute featurette on various actors and actresses chatting about their roles.

* “A Darker Side” (25:48)- An expansive featurette that explores the creation of the script, the sets, and the story influences and so on.

* Commentary by Tom Baker, Elisabeth Sladen, Prentis Hancock, and Philip Hinchcliffe- Any track with Tom Baker is fun to listen to. This is no exception.

Destiny Of The Daleks Extras:

* Photo gallery, trails and continuities, Radio Times listings, info text, optional CGI effects, trailer for “Beneath The Surface” DVD box set, Prime Computer adverts with Tom Baker and Lalla Ward, and a “Dr. Who” series 3 ad.

* A 9 ½ minute featurette titled “Directing Who” in which Ken Grieve talks about his experiences in directing the actors, actresses, and Daleks.

* “Terror Nation” (27:48)- A fascinating documentary on Terry Nation who created the infamous Daleks.

* Commentary by Lalla Ward, David Gooderson and Ken Grieve- A straight forward track that touches on behind-the-scenes tidbits, sets, etc.

Both episodes are presented in 4:3 fullscreen with a Dolby Digital Mono audio track.

Astro Boy Discs- 2 And 3 Of Ultra Collector's Edition

Category: Quick Reviews
The premise of the B&W 1963 animated cartoon: A scientist named Dr. Boyton loses his son and decides to replace him by building a robot son. Shortly after, the robot boy is discarded but is soon saved by a generous man named Dr. Elefun who helps Astro Boy realize his potential to use his powers to help fight evil and save lives. One of the reasons "Astro Boy" has continued to find an audience to this day is that it isn't the same old cartoon. Each episode has a completely different storyline. Throughout episodes 11-20, we see Astro Boy encountering thugs, robots, an artificial sun, a time traveler, and even dinosaurs. Granted, the dialogue and stories can be corny, but the intense action and multi-layered characters more than make up for the flaws. Afterall, it's not everyday that one can see a selfless more human than human robot fighting in a tornado. The 4:3 fullscreen picture quality looks fairly good for a 60's cartoon, but there was a noticeable amount of dirt. The Dolby Digital Stereo track is uneven. I noticed a good deal of fuzz and poor voice recordings, but I never had a hard time of hearing the sound f/x or dialogue. Note: Fans may want to check out the 1982 and 2004 animated series as well. Also, be on the lookout for the 2009 CGI "Astro Boy" animated feature by the company who worked on the wonderful "TMNT."
