“Doom Asylum” is the type of campy horror movie that is so bad it’s good.

The plot: After surviving a car wreck, in which the love of his life dies, a deformed survivor winds up in an asylum. 10 years after the accident, a group of teens and punk rockers randomly hang out at the abandoned asylum. In typical horror movie fashion, the insane deformed man begins killing the teens one by one with various autopsy weapons. Will anyone survive the crazed man?

“Doom Asylum” is in no way a serious horror film. It’s very much a campy slasher flick that pokes fun at its self on more than one occasion, and for good reason. This is truly a poorly made film. The characters are one dimensional, the budget is extremely low, and the plot is tedious and ridiculous. The worst aspect, however, has to be the dialogue, especially when the killer busts out one-liners like “I hate rap!” and “Relax and go with the flow!” The lines are so lame, in fact, that I found myself laughing at them a few times.

Overall, “Doom Asylum” is one of the better Code Red releases. Sure, it's a terrible film, but it’s also fun, schlocky entertainment

Note: Keep your eye out for “Sex And The City” star Kristin Davis. I’m sure she’s real proud of this role.

The 1.33:1 picture quality is about the same as past Code Red releases. It’s grainy, dirty, and filled with scratches. The Dolby Digital Stereo track was rather lifeless as well.

Extras:

* Code Red trailers.

* Interview with Richard Friedman, Bill Tasgal and Alex Kogan Jr. The three talk about distribution, set experiences, the budget, etc.

* Commentary by Bill Tasgal and Richard Friedman. The two chat (and laugh) about shooting locations, the actors, the f/x, etc. A decent commentary track.

Horror Rises From The Tomb

Category: Quick Reviews
"Horror Rises From The Tomb" is quite similar to "The Loreley's Grasp" in that it deals with infamous legends (in this case a sorcerer and sorceress) being resurrected. Vowing to seek revenge before their initial deaths, the two villains stay true to their words and begin to kill and rip out hearts. While the film suffers from the usual horror cliches (senseless characters, buckets of blood, constant nudity), there are genuinely chilling moments here. The psychotic, murderous men in the woods scene near the beginning was creepy and atmospheric. It's a shame the horror film didn't center around those characters, however, as the movie would have been far more memorable. What's more frightening than the actions HUMANS are capable of? Certainly not a mind-controlling, blood-thirsty sorcerer and sorceress. Extras: An introduction by Paul Naschy, a theatrical trailer, a Spanish credit sequence, a liner notes booklet, a still gallery, nearly 9 minutes of alternate scenes cutting out the nudity, and a tin-cannish sounding commentary track by Paul Naschy, Carlos Aured, and Angel Gomez Rivero.
