Review

“Dragon Ball Z: Tree Of Might” is one of the better DBZ films, while “Lord Slug” is one of the weakest.

The plots: In “Tree Of Might,” Goku and company face an evil Saiyan named Turles who has planted a planet draining plant that also happens to contain a fruit bearing unthinkable power. Can Turles and the tree be stopped? “Lord Slug” features the same old plot we’ve seen before. Goku must fight an evil Super Namek villain named Lord Slug.

Despite some lame eye-rolling humor between Gohan and his pet dragon Icarus, “Tree Of Might” is one of the better “Dragon Ball Z” films. Sure, it still has an evil, planet threatening villain, but there’s more to it than that. ‘Tree’ is more about an environmental threat, which is a big departure from the other DBZ flicks. One of the other big draws for this film is that we get to see Gohan transform into a ferocious were-monkey. Giant monkey action is certainly never a bad thing.

As for “Lord Slug,” this film doesn’t contain an original thought whatsoever. The story is basically a rehash of other DBZ films. As if that weren’t bad enough, viewers are also subjected to a Jar Jar like henchmen named Medamatcha. As you can no doubt guess, the highlight of the film is when Goku finally clobbers the annoying little alien. The other highlight, as much as I hate to say it, is the goofy little song and dance number at the beginning between Gohan and his dragon that we first believe irritates Piccolo. It’s a silly scene but it made me laugh.

The widescreen picture is clean and sharp looking. It’s odd, but these DVD releases of the movies often look superior to the Blu-ray releases. There is a lot less dirt and grain.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 and Japanese 2.0 audio tracks sounded good to me. They both contain clear dialogue and loud action.

The only extras on these two discs are trailers for “Baki Grappler,” “Dragonball GT,” “Dragonball Z,” “Tsubasa,” “One Piece,” “Case Closed,” “Yu Yu Hakusho,” “Ghost Hunt,” “xxxHolic,” and “Hana.”

Reno 911!: Reno's Most Wanted

Category: Quick Reviews
Even after four years, "Reno 911!" is still far and away Comedy Central's most consistant and funny show. Whether or not this single disc compilation of episodes from those seasons are the best of the series is, of course, debatable, but there's no denying what IS here is funny as hell, and serves as a great retropsective for those on a budget (and the "Reading Ron" episode alone is worth the price). From Paramount.
