Review

Philip Baker Hall plays Arthur, an older gentleman who, following the death of his wife after a long illness, is ready to end his life, when he is stopped by a small duckling that happens his way. Maybe it’s the untimely death of his son many years back, but he decides on a whim to take care of this little waterfowl, sharing a bed and food with it and giving it a name. After being kicked out of his modest apartment, Arthur takes Joe on a long adventure in search of water – an ocean, a lake, anything – in a desperate version of L.A. that is overrun with pollution and trash.
It's a pleasant enough film, riding solely on the good-natured charm of Hall in the lead. It's a different role that I'm used to seeing this actor in, but I think that's what makes it so interesting to watch. He's done grief before, but I don't think I've ever seen him this down-and-out and desperate before. His performance carries the film. There are moments of whimsical entertainment to be had here, but otherwise, Duck moves way too slowly for its own good. The simplest of scenes, like Arthur pulling out some food for his newfound friend, seem to drag on interminably and for no apparent purpose. There's a palpable air of sadness to the movie that feels honest and true but otherwise, it feels plodding and too quirky for its own good.

The title character of this film is a wizard hell bent on taking control of the wizarding world by destroying any other wizards that are on the planet. The only one that stands in his way is a doddering old man and his niece. The movie doesn't get any more complex than this. It instead bumbles along for 90 minutes and weighed down by stilted acting and a script that reads like a piece of Anne Rice fan fiction. The only remarkable thing about this movie is that it features an appearance by Julie Strain in which you don't get to see her without her clothes on. Besides that, it is a movie that should be forwarded directly to the men behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 to be mocked mercilessly.

Movie Quotes

It isn't that I don't like you, Susan,
because after all, in moments of quiet, I'm
strangely drawn toward you; but, well, there
haven't been any quiet moments!
