What could be more fun than two cheap American-International flicks from the 70s featuring huge casts of has-been thespians going through the motions to collect their paychecks? The answer is simple...how about two cheap American-International flicks from the 70s featuring huge casts of has-been thespians going through the motions to collect their paychecks on the same disk? Part of MGM's Midnite Movies series, this DVD offers unintentional laughs galore with Empire of the Ants and Tentacles. Empire features a slumming Joan Collins before Dynasty resurrected what could euphemistically be called a career. Directed by the semi-legendary 1950s big-bug maven Bert I. Gordon (initials: B.I.G.), this is an endearingly bad movie with special effects that would have been bad twenty years earlier, and acting on par with the average AIP dreck of Gordon's 50s fright flicks. Things dubiously improve on the flipside of the disc, Tentacles, a cheap Italian-made rip-off of Jaws, this time featuring a hungry octopus terrorizing the California coast. John Huston, Shelley Winters and Henry Fonda (who literally phones in his performance) lend their talents in support of a phony-looking rubber monster as it attacks a sailboat regatta to the accompaniment of hilariously inappropriate, harpsichord-driven disco music. The only extras included are theatrical trailers, but lovers of bad cinema will find a goldmine in this release.

John Oliver: Terrifying Times

Category: Quick Reviews
As one of the finest correspondents ever to share studio space with Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show", John Oilver has shown a surfeit of acerbic and cheeky wit in his reporting and commentary.

Like the best people to join the staff of Comedy Central's fake news empire, Oliver had a fine career as the host of a radio show on BBC and as a stand up comic in his native England. This DVD showcases Oliver in his stand up guise, poking holes at political and cultural targets galore, as well as tearing his new home country down a few pegs. Oliver stands out from the rest of the political comedy crowd thanks to his wry delivery, obvious smarts and his keen eye for the absurd. It's a brilliantly funny special and one well worth your time and attention.
