Review

Norman Mailer's gripping screenplay is brought to life by a young Tommy Lee Jones as Gary Gilmore, a cold hearted killer who was the first man put to death in 1976 after the death penalty was reinstated.  The "director's cut" dvd is 2 hours, 15 minutes long and contains the original dialog before the film's language was cleaned up for television broadcast but it's length was originally almost 3 hours.

This a hard hitting true story of the last year in the life of Gilmore, who not only killed without mercy; he also had a Svengali" like influence over his girl friend Nicole, played in the film by Rosanna Arquette.  Eli Wallach plays Gilmore's uncle; someone who supports Gilmore in his quest to be executed, but who also has no pity for the man.  Christine Lahti plays Gilmore's sister, who absolutely hates the man and shows it in intense scenes.  This film belongs to Tommy Lee Jones and his performance, which put Jones on the map and was one of the first of many great performances by the actor.
This new dvd looks anything but new, as the 1982 film is quite beat up with major flaws and dirt visible in many scenes.
The new version will satisfy some fans for the restored dialog but will be frustrating for others who enjoyed the original length mini-series.
