Review

Dermot Mulroney brings uptight girlfriend Sarah Jessica Parker home for the holidays to meet his laid-back (and slightly off-kilter) family, which includes Diane Keaton, Luke Wilson, Craig T. Nelson & Rachel McAdams. Naturally, sparks fly as they try to deal with each other. Though touted as a comedy, "The Family Stone" is seldom laugh-out-loud funny, and spends most of its time trying to get us to care about these people, though only a few of them are truly likeable. Still the film is mostly interesting, featuring a terrific ensemble cast and a smart script. But it is also phenomenally predictable and, at the end, everything is wrapped up so neat & perfect that we don't buy into it. This one is a solid rental, but I doubt if it's worth seeing more than once. From Fox Home Entertainment.

Adventures of Oswald The Lucky Rabbit-Walt Disney Treasures

Category: Quick Reviews
This year's Disney Treasures series features one standout tin which is gold to the other silver tins. I believe it is an homage to the return to Disney from Walt's first fully animated series, Oswald The Lucky Rabbit. These black and white silent cartoons preceded Mickey and were produced by the animation team , lead by Ub Iwerks from 1927-1928. When it came to renew this popular character with Universal, Disney learned the hard way to protect his characters from then on, as he was told by Universal's president that Universal owned the character and not Disney. It wasn't until 2006 that Oswald was finally returned to Disney in a bizarre trade between ABC/Disney and NBC/Universal. Disney got Oswald and NBC got Al Michaels, the sports commentator.

This 2 disc set features restored Oswald cartoons with newly produced soundtracks and as with all Disney Treasures sets, a lot of extras. Animation fans are in for a real treat with this set as a lot of the features and commentaries are set around the original Disney animation crew, especially Ub Iwerks, the man who first drew Mickey. A lengthy documentary, produced by his daughter is features on disc two.

The Oswald cartoons themselves feature a lot of familiar looking characters; some compare Oswald to early Mickey, but there are others such as a recurring villain named Pete, who "sometimes" has a peg leg. There is also variations of what would become Horatio Horse and Clarabelle The Cow. The cartoons, many of whom were edited by Walter Lanz (Woody Woodpecker) show early animation techniques devised by the Disney animators, including fluid motion, pantomime (these were silent shorts), running gags, and 3D perspective. Most of these five minute shorts look very good for their age but Leonard Maltin, the host for all these Treasure sets, makes a disclaimer in his intro that some of the films are not up to Disney's high standards of restoration.

If you love cartoons, you owe it to yourself to pick up this piece of classic animation history.
