Review

“The Foot Fist Way” is a cult classic in waiting.

“The Foot Fist Way” is a quirky, low budget indie. comedy that revolves around an arrogant, sometimes creepy Taekwondo instructor named Fred Simmons who begins to breakdown after experiencing marital problems. There’s also a subplot regarding a martial arts movie star whom Fred worships that is pivotal to the movie (and the conclusion).

 

After starring in supporting roles in recent summer hits “Pineapple Express” and “Tropic Thunder,” it was nice to see actor Danny McBride in a starring vehicle as he deserves to have many of them. I’m pleased to say he is great in his role here as the know-it-all Fred Simmons. It’s a very memorable character that you really can only see McBride playing. On top of that, the screenplay (written by Jody Hill, Danny McBride, and Ben Best) is quite funny. Granted, the story is thin and far from original, but there are so many gut busting quotes here that it more than makes up for the film’s shortcomings.

 

Extras include an alternate ending, 2 bloopers 20 additional scenes, a 25 minute behind-the-scenes featurette, Paramount trailers and a good commentary with Jody Hill, Randy Gambill, and Danny McBride.
