Review

“Freakazoid!” is amusing in small doses.

For those that do not know, the Steven Spielberg produced animated series “Freakazoid!” follows a nerdy teen who magically transforms into a spastic blue skinned “superhero” that spends his time fighting goofy villains like the Lobe and Milkman. Freakazoid also spends a lot of time being with and rescuing his girlfriend Steph, whom does not know about his alter ego. Season 1 consists of 14 episodes.

At first glance, “Freakazoid!” is an amusing parody of superheroes like Batman, but the fun soon wears off as you realize the character’s Jerry Lewis esque schtick becomes rather annoying. In fact, a few of the other random characters/stories like the socially inept geek known as Fanboy and the Lawn Gnomes are far more interesting characters who quite frankly deserved to get their own show. Still, each “Freakazoid!” episode does have their own laugh out loud moments, especially when random references to such things as “E.T.,” “It’s A Wonderful Life,” “Star Wars,” and of course the 90’s animated “Batman” series appear on screen.

In conclusion, “Freakazoid!” is worth a rent for animation and comic fans, but I’d recommend watching the other superior Spielberg produced cartoons “Animaniacs” and “Tiny Toons” instead.

The fullscreen picture may have spots of grain and dirt, but these episodes looked a lot better than many 90’s animated TV show releases I have seen.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track contains clear dialogue, sound f/x and music.

* Various Warner trailers and 4 minutes of odd promos.

* “Freakazoid! The Original Freak” is a 17 minute featurette that takes a look at what the show is all about.

* Commentary on episodes 1, 2, and 12 with Paul Rugg, John McCann and Tom Ruegger. The trio talk about various skits, pop culture references, comedy, scripts, and characters.
