"Indie Sex" is a 3 part documentary. The first and best part is titled "Censored." This comprehensive overview of the history of censorship in cinema covers subjects like silent stag films, the MPAA, Jean Harlow, banned films, and so on. As Censorship is and probably always will be an important subject to me personally, I found this to be a great piece that will hopefully open people's eyes. Notable commentators include John Cameron Mitchell, Peter Sarsgaard, and various critics. Part two is simply dubbed "Teens." Unlike "Censored," this section glosses over the teen genre and mainly focuses on hits like "Porkys" and "American Pie" or cautionary sex tales like "Kids." It would have been nice to see another half hour tacked on here. The third and final chapter deals with "Extremes," which looks at S&M, Bondage, necrophilia, Bettie Page, etc. While it's interesting to see the various sexual topics explored in cinema, I could do without the IFC spotlighting their own films. That's just tacky. Extras: Trailers for "The Whitest Kids U'Know" and "This Film Is Not Yet Rated," historical timelines, a 1 1/2 minute extended stag scene, a 9 part interview gallery touching on subjects as celebrity sex tapes and Hollywood Vs. Indie, and a 30 minute Taboos: Director's Cut section looking at European cinema, 60/70's sex films, indies like "Crash" etc. There are also several interviews with Atom Egoyan and John Waters. Why wasn't Waters in the other segments? He has more to say than virtually everyone else interviewed.
