Review

“Ghost Hunt” does not improve in the second volume.

The second volume of “Ghost Hunt” contains the rest of the entire series (episodes 14-25). The episodes included are 3 4 part episodes titled “Forbidden Pastime,” “The Bloodstained Labyrinth,” and “The Cursed House.” The episodes find Naru, Mai and the rest of the Shibuya Psychic Research team investigating spirits, mysterious disappearances, psychics, ghosts and even a ghost dog.

If you watched the first volume of “Ghost Hunt,” you already know what to expect as these episodes are more of the same. Nothing has improved or changed about this series at all. We are still forced to watch overly dramatic situations, formulaic episodes, Mai yelling and screaming a lot, and lame comedic lines like “This place is messed up!” and “This is totally like an RPG!”

Also like the first volume, the more straight forward and creepier scenes are the show’s lone strength. Notable scenes include a ferocious ghost dog, blood dripping down a wall, and an intense sequence involving a horde of drowned corpses/zombies that appear in the action packed series finale. It’s a shame the rest of the series did not have more moments like that as it would have been far more watchable.

As with most Funimation releases, the widescreen picture quality is quite good. The English and Japanese Stereo tracks are also solid. The atmospheric music and creepy sound f/x were especially impressive.

Extras:

* Funimation trailers.

* "Ghost Hunt" manga pages.

* Textless opening.

* Character case files.

* "Ghost Sightings"- A brief collection of ghostly still images from the series.
