Review

"Ghost Whisperer" is a curious blend of supernatural beliefs, humor, and soap opera.  Starring the stunning Jennifer Love Hewitt, who is also producer, the show follows Hewitt as Melinda Gordon, who runs an antique shop by day in a small town and talks to ghosts regularly.  Having the gift to see spirits since she was a child has enabled Melinda to help restless spirits find peace and "crossover into the light" in nearly every show.  Her husband, played by David Conrad, worries about the emotional toll this takes on her (she cries in just about every episode) but she is also rewarded emotionally by helping others move on.  Hewitt holds her own in the series and is helped by cast members Conrad, and by Jay Mohr, as a professor of the occult, who brings needed humor to the show.  Camryn Manheim plays Melinda's partner in her antique shop and stays away from the supernatural stuff.  She is really under used in this series. 

This season's shows delve into the small town (Grandview) and its history but also many of the show's deal with Melinda's relationship with her parents: her father, who she thinks is dead, and her just as psychic mother, played by Anne Archer. This subplot is apparant in most of the episodes and is finally resolved by the last episode of the season but of course a cliffhanger ends the season's last few moments.

Extras are plentiful on this five disc set; featuring a lot of interactive features; create your own cemetary scene, an interactive haunted house, Melinda's haunted diary, plus other features such as Melinda's fashion evolution from Season 1-3, Jay Mohr talking about his role, and special effects special on creating the ghosts on the series.  Commentary is also provided on select episodes. The 18 episode season set is a good value for fans.

"Ghost Whisperer" is not a Buffy; Jennifer Love Hewitt is her own character.  Some cast members are under used and some over used but the show continues to have a loyal following.  Season 4 is slated to begin in early October.  Fans will want to pick up this set as it answers a lot of personal questions about Melinda Gordon, which have been an undercurrent on the show for two seasons.

This is an amusing video documentary which follows the exploits of Jason "Crazy Legs" Conti, a charmingly flaky New Yorker with aspirations of becoming a champion in the sport of competitive eating. Conti is serious (and quite passionate) about the sport, and we follow him around the country as he competes in various contests, as well as his efforts to prepare for each event. The film isn't nearly as tacky as it sounds (though watching Conti chow down on sticks of butter is pretty icky), and displays genuine affection for its subject, who comes across as a pretty likable guy. One gets the impression he'd be pretty fun to party with. From Blue Underground.
