"Hell Girl" is leagues above most anime series.

The premise: A mysterious website (that only pops up at midnight) allows users to type in the name of anyone they wish to die and go to hell. The catch? Those who wish death on others will also go to hell once they die. Throughout the two volumes I reviewed, the stand-alone episodes find various characters getting revenge on bullies, cheaters, a stalker, a murder, a friend, a mean veterinarian, etc.

While “Hell Girl” may bear similarities to “Death Note” and “The Ring,” don’t let that dissuade you. This anime series is dark, atmospheric, disturbing, and superbly written. Sure, the episodes are repetitive in structure, but since each episode has a completely unique tale, you never get bored. Plus, in volume 2, we start seeing a story arc forming around a father (and his daughter) who is investigating Hell Girl. We also gradually see (and learn) more about Hell Girl and the other employees of Hell.

One of the main draws of the series is the variety of stories. Yes, a large portion of the plots revolve revenge against enemies/victimizers, but there are also episodes, for instance, in which the death scheme backfires like in “Cracked Mask.” Additionally, it is fascinating to see each person’s trip to hell as they all have a different hellish experience and witness terrifying images that make them confront their crimes.

While I’m showering the show with praise, I have to applaud “Hell Girl” for delving into the dark side of humanity. It’s refreshing to see an animated series that doesn’t contain ridiculous humor and sight gags.

The 16:9 widescreen picture is sharp. The foggy style really gives the show a sense of atmosphere.

The dubbed English 5.1 Dolby Surround track is surprisingly solid. There are a few instances in which characters have a whiney voice, but overall the U.S. dub is better than most. The Japanese 2.0 Stereo track with subtitles also has clear dialogue, score, etc.

Extras:

Volume 1:

* 2 art cards.

* Funimation trailers and textless songs.

* A promo music video and a making of.

* Main character profiles.

Volume 2:

* Textless songs, 2 art cards and Funimation trailers.

* A pointless 23 minute montage episode.

Cheech And Chong's Up In Smoke - Collector's Edition

Category: Quick Reviews
You'd think Cheech & Chong's brand of 70's drug humor wouldn't age well. And you'd be wrong. These guys practically invented drug humor, and this, their first and only good film together, holds up remarkably well. The movie is seldom laugh-out-loud funny (it wasn't even back in '78), and it probably helps if you are as wasted as these two appear to be on screen, but the movie remains pretty amusing, both as a nostalgia trip and an introduction to the comic duo. Aside from a retrospective interview session, none of the bonus features are worth much, but the movie itself looks and sounds pretty good. From Paramount.
