Review

The live-action "Hellboy" film, adapted from the popular comic book, was a lot better than I thought it was gonna be, thanks to a disarmingly funny performance by Ron Perlman in the title role. The same can be said for this direct-to-DVD animated sequel, which also benefits hugely from great voice-work by Perlman, reprising his role. While I would prefer another live-action follow-up (which is coming in 2008), this well-made & entertaining feature-length cartoon will do in the meantime, especially since original comic creator Mike Mignola and "Hellboy" director Guillermo Del Toro had a hand in it. This big screen treatment of the uberpopular Nickelodeon series looks and plays like a 90 minute version of the show, meaning fans will be in hog heaven and others will go into epileptic shock about 20 minutes into it. The plot features Spongebob and his buddy, Patrick, on a quest to recover King Neptune's stolen crown, which Mr. Krabs has been framed for. All the show's main characters (plus a few new ones) are well-served by a genuinely amusing script, and the whole thing is worth watching just to see Spongebob & Patrick 'Ride the Hasselhoff' (featuring everyone's favorite "Baywatch" hunk in the role he was literally born to play). From Paramount.
