The Nick Lyons Vs. the Maneater Saga continues with “The Hive.”

The plot: A part of Brazil is being terrorized by swarms of killer ants. It’s up to a team of scientists/exterminators to take care of this crisis, but will they be able to survive?

Just as I have finally received some great discs to review, I step outside my house to find the latest “Maneater” title (“The Hive”) on my doorstep. In the instant I saw it, I literally shouted “Nooooooo” as I knew I was in for more torture. Having now viewed this film, I can indeed say it was torture to sit through. In fact, this might be the worst “Maneater” film yet.

I’m going to flat out say that “The Hive” is a completely brainless and utterly moronic movie. The CGI ants look like bad video game F/X, the extermination weapons are wannabe Proton Packs from “Ghostbusters,” star Tom Wopat (of “Dukes Of Hazzard” fame) looks drunk throughout, the “menacing” score is laughable at best, and to top it off- the movie includes a plot point involving an ant computer. And yes, to answer your question, the ant computer looks and play even worse than it sounds (as impossible as that may seem).

Conclusion: Avoid “The Hive.” Nothing more needs to be said.

The widescreen picture quality is clearer than most Maneater titles. The nighttime scenes are a bit grainy, but a lot of the daytime scenes are pretty sharp looking.

The Dolby Digital Stereo track is flat. There’s hard any life to it.

The only extra is a “Maneater” DVD ad.

Coming To America: Collector's Edition

Category: Quick Reviews
Forget the godawful "Norbit." If you really want to see Eddie Murphy's considerable range playing multiple characters, you're better off sticking with this modern classic, which may not be his best film, but has aged better than most of his 80s output. It's also probably the first film where we actually see Murphy more as an actor than a comedian. Fans of the film should enjoy the batch of new extras included with this Collector's Edition. From Paramount.

Movie Quotes

Well, I've wrestled with reality for thirty-
five years, Doctor, and I’m happy to state I
finally won out over it.
