Here's hoping Mike Judge once again has the last laugh. His first live-action theatrical film, "Office Space," tanked in theaters, but quickly became a cult hit on DVD. "Idiocracy" is an even better film, but got even worse treatment by its distributor, only playing in a handful of theaters before being unceremoniously dumped onto home video. It's too bad, because it's more clever than many comedies released in 2006, and deserves a bigger audience than it's gotten so far. In this one, Luke Wilson plays a slacker who volunteers to be cryogenically frozen for an experiment. Through a mishap, he awakens 500 years later, and Americans have since become so ignorant and stupid that he's now the most intelligent man on the planet. A savage and clever satire of the self-centeredness & dumbing-down of society via technology & the media, "Idriocracy" is loaded with laughs, not to mention several instances where the viewer will say, "Hell, that's EXACTLY the direction we're heading!". If there's any justice in the world, this is a future cult classic. From Fox.

Star Trek - The Animated Series

Category: Quick Reviews
This old Saturday morning chestnut from the 70s isn't considered by some purists to be part of the so-called "Star Trek" canon. I'm not sure why, since the main characters are voiced by the same actors (James Doohan also provides voices for a lot of other characters), and many episodes feature stories creative & intelligent enough to rival the original show. Maybe it's because it's so cheap looking. The animation is downright awful, even for the early 70s, and the cheesy stock music score doesn't help much. But for me, this was a wonderful nostalgia trip, and I enjoyed seeing these old cartoons again. Whether or not I'd want to sit through them again is another story. All 22 episodes, some with optional audio or text commentary, are included in this nicely packaged box. And, since there's nothing else related to "Star Trek" left to release on DVD, completists may want to pick this up. From Paramount
