Review

Raymond Burr's second year as the cantankerous Robert Ironside is another great DVD set from Shout Factory. Burr's acting is just as great as it was on Perry Mason, and so are his supporting cast of Emmy winner Barbara Anderson, Don Galloway, and Don Mitchell. The series addresses some powerful issues that were in the forefront in the early 70s and the shows writers were miles ahead of their time in addressing drug use, abortion, talk show hosts, and crooked cops. The show's cast was allowed to stretch a bit in Season Two as the main characters deal with their own personal lives, with episodes surrounding the other team members. Barbara Anderson, who plays officer Eve Whitfield, left the show after this season to the dismay of many fans.
Guest stars for this season are also very distinguished; Joseph Cotton, Anne Baxter, Burgess Merideth, Richardo Montalban, Milton Berle (who also wrote the episode he stars in), Margaret O'Brien, and Ed Asner. Picture quality is ok for a 70's show but it has some scenes of very soft focus. Dirt and damage also show up at various points in episodes. Obviously, the series has not been restored. In summary, its a powerful 7 disc set that is a true reflection of its times and issues. Burr and cast plus talented guest stars and writers make this Season Two a must buy for Raymond Burr fans.
