The documentary “Jimmy Carter Man From Plains” follows the Plains, Georgia native on a book promotion tour across the country. Along the way, we also learn about (and in some cases see) his habitat work, footage of the Camp David peace negotiations between Egypt and Israel, and other information about the former President’s personal life.

“Man From Plains” is not only an up close and personal documentary on Jimmy Carter’s life from past to present, but it’s also a provoking and intriguing look at the media. Throughout Carter’s interview and book signing tour for his novel “Palestine Peace Not Apartheid,” we see how nearly all of the various media outlets gang up on Carter merely because of the book’s controversial statements. As a result of this mob mentality, we see Mr. Carter tirelessly trying to defend his statements and point of view.

While it is interesting to see Carter’s journey, it does become repetitious to watch on screen. I understand that Demme wanted viewers to experience the same emotions that Carter himself was going through on his tour, but it doesn’t exactly make for the most entertaining viewing experience. Regardless, this documentary is a fine tribute to an extraordinary man who continuously does great work around the world.
