"Katt Williams: American Hustle- The Movie" would have worked better as a straight forward stand-up special.
"Katt Williams: American Hustle- The Movie" is a blend of stand-up and scripted gags. The feature begins with Katt Williams taking pitches from a film studio to star in ridiculous films that resemble the likes of "300" and "Norbit." Rather than agreeing to a role, he decides to go on a country wide comedy tour with fellow comedians Red Grant, Luenell, and Melanie Comarcho. What follows is snippets of their stand-up and a rather lengthy stand-up piece by Katt himself. Also included are appearances by celebs like Ludacris, Jeremy Piven and even Snoop Dogg. There's no denying that Katt Williams is a talented comedian. From what I have seen of his film roles, he steals virtually every scene he is in. Unfortunately, the films he appears in are less than stellar and "American Hustle" is no exception. Rather than releasing a straight up stand-up DVD, he throws in sketches of himself at his mansion, in a studio, and on the road in a car. To me, this seemed like mere filler to make the DVD longer. Thankfully, we do get to see him on stage and he delivers several hearty laughs with jokes about sexual acts and Shaq and his children. Some of his jokes don't hit the mark, however, especially those about terrorist executions. He also says a number of completely over the top, vulgar and degrading comments about women that did not have me laughing. Extras include a Katt Williams DVD ad, two extended versions of movie parodies, and 7 bloopers.

"Beyond The Ring" is based on a true story about a retired fighter named Andre who gets back into the ring for a chance to win a $300,000 prize for his daughter's tumor operation. Even though the story has its heart in the right place, the main star's (Andre Lima) lack of acting abilities ends up hurting the low budget film. Sure, he can fight (see his underground battle with Zulu), but his lifeless line deliveries were so cringe worthy that it made me re-think my opinion of Steven Seagal's acting. Additionally, the script contains lots of filler moments, namely countless "Rocky" rip-off training montages and repetitious flashbacks. Alas, the film does have one gleaming star. His name? Gary Busey. Yes, the man, the myth, the legend himself appears here as a sleazy, money-hungry production company owner. In typical Busey fashion, he owns every seen he is in. Whether he's making a priceless expression, ranting about "fists of faith," or hitting on his assistant, Busey's unpredictable acting is always worth watching in my humble opinion. I'd even watch him read the phone book. A trailer is the only extra. Note: I reviewed a promo copy and thus did not comment on the video and audio quality.
