Review

"EliteXC" is watchable, but it's more or less a second rate UFC.

“King Of The Cage” is an exhaustive six disc 20 hour set of over 90 fighting matches from the EliteXC (Extreme Combat) mixed martial arts league. Among the stars seen on these discs are Jeff Curan, Bo Cantrell, Charles Bennett, Thomas Denny, Ronald Jhun, and Del Hawkins.

The EliteXC can best be described as a mixture of UFC and WWE. The fights are real, but some of the fighters engage in silly theatrics (such as Charles Bennett dressing up as Hannibal Lecter). Additionally, the league isn’t exactly high profile. Many of the fighters are amateurs and all of the events appear to be in very small locations with sparse crowds. There’s certainly not much money being thrown at the league as of yet. Still, some of the matches are impressive. Charles Bennett vs. Dan Loman was a fun watch, and Jason Ireland vs. Mike O’Donnell was as intense as any fight I have seen from UFC. They don’t call Ireland the Irish Tornado for nothing.

I’m not sure if they qualify as extras, but there’s a 50 minute spotlight on Thomas “The Wildman” Denny as well as match rules on each disc.

Of course, "Whose Line is it Anyway?" features some of the best improvisational comedy ever seen on American TV, and the cool thing about having the show on DVD is you can skip some of the sketches that don't work as well (Wayne Brady is a funny guy, but I could never stand the musical numbers he's forced to perform). But, while it's great they've finally gotten around to releasing this stuff on disc, Warner has chosen the annoying trend of packaging only half a season at a time, meaning not only do you have to pay for two volumes, you half to wait several months before having an entire season. There's no qualms about the content, presented here uncensored, along with some unaired sketches and outtakes. When the show's really clicking (which is remarkably often), there's never been funnier sketch comedy series on television. From Warner Home Video
