The apoplectic comic Lewis Black’s latest venture is this fine new program that stages mock trials between two evils of the world (weed vs. beer, Dick Cheney vs. Paris Hilton, etc.). Arguing the case for either issue is a talented comic who uses his/her particular brand of wit and wisdom to speak on behalf of one evil or another.

It is no wonder that this show has captured as large an audience as it has seemed to. Taking celebrities and dictators down a peg is always fun and watching Lewis Black get himself riled up is never boring.

What sells it for me, however, is to see some of my favorite comics – Andrew Daly, Patton Oswalt, and Paul F. Tompkins among them – at their acerbic best. Their witty repartee and wry commentary on the issues of the day is often as sharp and as biting as their stand up material.

The show is best taken in small chunks, as more than three episodes in a row can start to wear on even the most stalwart of viewers, but this DVD should be a welcome addition to any comedy fans collection.
