Review

I know a lot of people who think the last season of M*A*S*H* featured too many episodes that were overly sentimental or serious, but I dunno...a show can't last 11 years without undergoing at least a LITTLE growth. Besides, serious moments were a fixture of the series throughout its history. Maybe it's because the two-hour finale was so emotionally charged that it sort of defined the tone of the last season for a lot of fans. And looking back at this collection of the final season, you can sort of see why. With 20/20 hindsight, you can almost feel the impending finality in the episodes prior to the last one. By this time, the laugh track is almost non-existent (which is a good thing), and many episodes are more reflective, sentimental, or focused of one major character's dilemma & epiphany. Of course, the show is still great (and often quite funny), and the series finale will still have fans reaching for the Kleenex. A terrific series coda from Fox.

Drawn Together - Season 1: Uncensored

The reality show genre gets a much needed ribbing in this 2-disc set from Comedy Central. But while the idea of taking thinly disguised animated versions of modern & classic cartoon characters and putting them in a large house (a la "The Surreal Life" & "The Real World") is an inspired idea for a 10 minute sketch, "Drawn Together" wears out its welcome really fast. Most episodes include a few sharp and witty satirical moments, but they are eventually overwhelmed by mountains of crude sexual & scatological humor in an effort to be hip and edgy. Crude humor can be wonderful entertainment, but there's nothing here that hasn't been done better before. The songs, however, are hilarious. From Paramount.
