Review

This television classic made James Garner a star and this disc features Garner on the cover although two of three epsisodes offered also have Jack Kelly also in them. This short set of shows offers Maverick at its best and includes many Warner stars in the episodes including Efrem Zimbalist Jr. The stories involve Maverick setting up a sting for a crooked banker, The Mavericks trying to prevent their old "Pappy" from marrying a gold digger, and Maverick in a Gunsmoke parody. I'm glad Warner is finally releasing their older television material; I hope eventually they will release season sets of this classic series. Picture is so-so on some scenes in the episodes; some out of focus shots and noise is present. Warner should clean the episodes up if they do get plan to release this show in season sets.

Towelhead

Category: Quick Reviews
For having only seen the movie once, I have a hard time really gauging just what kind of audience Alan Ball was intending this film for - or to understand just what he saw in the source material (Alicia Erian's novel) to want to bring this to the silver screen.

Yet, here this film is in all its muddled glory, a concoction bad enough that the only pull quote the DVD producers could find for its packaging was that of an Ain't It Cool News reviewer.

The titular character is Jasira, a young Lebanese girl whose budding sexuality engenders all kinds of horrific and uncomfortable reactions from the men around her. Many want to sleep with her, others loathe her and still others pity her. Jasira saunters through it all not understanding her own hormones and feelings, therefore leaving her open to all manner of manipulative pushing and pulling by her boyfriend, the sleazy Army reservist that lives next door and her angry father.

Again, I ask, "Who is this for?" The only acceptable audience I can think of is Mr. Ball himself and voyeuristic men who are too afraid to rent pornography from their video store. Its sheer pointless filmmaking at its worst, seeming to want to make some underhanded statements about intolerance and female sexuality but coming off more intolerant and sexist than any film in recent memory.
