Review

“Meet Dave” is a decent Eddie Murphy vehicle.

The plot: A human sized starship (in the shape of the ship’s commander) commanded by a race of tiny aliens has come to Earth. Their mission? To drain the oceans of salt as their home planet is dying and needs energy. Will the aliens be able to go through with their mission or will they come to understand and like the human race?

I know what you readers are thinking. A big budget sci-fi movie starring Eddie Murphy sounds like a recipe for an utter disaster. Luckily, that is not the case for “Meet Dave.” While the movie is a typical fish out of water story with some corny jokes, the movie itself is actually rather entertaining. After the disaster known as “Norbit,” Eddie Murphy finally gives two performance(s) that are actually funny. Not only does he play the ship’s captain, but he also plays the human shaped starship who must learn American customs, greetings, movements, and vocabulary. The ship’s interactions with humans is undoubtedly the most amusing part of the film, especially the scene inside an Old Navy store.

In addition to being humorous, ‘Dave’ also boasts some truly impressive F/X and camera tricks. The most spectacular sequence involves a tiny Eddie Murphy and Gabrielle Union roaming the busy streets of New York.

Summary: “Meet Dave” is much better than anyone could have expected. It’s not the type of film to run out and buy, but it’s certainly worth a rent.

I did not comment on the audio or video as I only received a screener copy and not the final product.

The only extras are 6 Fox trailers and “Crew Confessions,” in which the starship crew members explain their function on board the ship. However,  I have read the final DVD is supposed to be a two-disc set with several other extras.

http://www.foxhomevideo.com/ John Ford's excellent but almost entirely made up saga of Wyatt Earp and his gunfight at the OK Corral. Led by Henry Fornda as Wyatt, the cast also includes Walter Brennan (he ain't lovable in this one), Victor Mature as a suave Doc Holliday, and Linda Darnell as his lover. The disc includes the pre release version of the film and commentary from Wyatt Earp III.Part of Fox Home Video 's classic series.

It isn't that I don't like you, Susan,
because after all, in moments of quiet, I'm
strangely drawn toward you; but, well, there
haven't been any quiet moments!
