Review

“Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” is a “Handy Manny” wannabe.

Designed to be an educational/semi-interactive series for very young children, “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” revolves around a group of Disney characters (namely Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Donald, and Daisy) that help each other out whenever a mystery or problem arises. In this particular disc, there are 4 episodes with plots about a mystery guest, Donald turning into a frog, Minnie and company attempting to deliver soup to a sick Goofy, and Minnie accidentally getting put to sleep for 100 years by a rose.

 

While I think it’s great that this series includes scenes (with the characters) talking to the screen to include viewers in on the mystery, there are far better educational animated series out there. ‘Clubhouse’ is very much a slapped together project that was made for a quick buck. It doesn’t help that it is a repetitive program that uses stock footage over and over again. With that said, kids will probably get a kick out of helping Mickey and gang solve a mystery by choosing what tools are needed for various jobs.

 

The fullscreen picture quality is clean as can be. The Dolby Digital Stereo track is equally sharp as well.

"Garfield Gets Real" is a feature length CGI animated tale in which a bored Garfield decides to spice up his life by transporting himself from the cartoon world to the real world. As nice as it is to see Garfield creator Jim Davis deeply involved in this project, it's a shame the story is as flat as a pancake. You'd think a personal story by Davis about feeling as if Garfield has run out of jokes and steam would be interesting, but unfortunately the movie just goes to show how tired the character has become. While "Garfield Gets Real" is leagues better than the two ulcer-worthy live-action Garfield movies, that still isn't saying much. Don't bother with this one. The movie is presented in a semi-murky 1.78:1 widescreen format with a 5.1 Dolby Surround track. Extras include 3 games (2 on DVD-ROM), bloopers, trailers for "The Fantastic 4: World's Greatest Heroes," "Care Bears: Oopsy Does It," "Firehouse Dog," and Strawberry Shortcake: The Sweet Dreams Movie." The disc also contains 6 featurettes titled: "Pencils, Paws, And Ink: Creating The Garfield Comic Strip," "Jim Davis: Raw And Un-Cat," "The Animation Process," "Legends Working Together," "Finding Your Voice," and "Animating From The Seoul."
