Review

"Mister Lonely" is an intriguing film, but it isn't a complete success.

The plot: A “lonely” Michael Jackson impersonator is persuaded by a Marilyn Monroe impersonator to travel to a secluded commune inhabited completely by fellow impersonators (such as Charlie Chaplin, the 3 Stooges, Abraham Lincoln and even Buckwheat). While at the commune, Michael begins to bond and work with the other impersonators while also trying to find out who he really is. Meanwhile, there is a crucial subplot about a group of nuns who have discovered they can jump out of a plane without a parachute and survive.

If you’ve seen director Harmony Korine’s past films “Gummo” and “Julien Donkey-Boy,” it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that “Mister Lonely” is another offbeat film filled with bizarre imagery such as flying nuns, Werner Herzog as a Priest, Buckwheat riding a horse and talking about chickens, and the 3 Stooges shooting diseased sheep. If it all sounds a little too arty and pretentious, that’s because it is. The middle half of the movie in particular is almost aimless and tends to veer a bit off track of the main ideas. Still, there’s no denying that ‘Lonely’ is a unique film that dives into some meaty themes about identity, one’s place in the world, fate, and miracles.

The widescreen picture quality is a bit grainy in spots, but overall the PQ is solid.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is fairly low key as this is a rather quiet, dialogue-driven movie.

Extras:
* IFC trailers.
* 6 deleted scenes.
* A 12 minute making of that includes interviews, set footage and chats about images and experiences that inspired the film.

Nancy Drew

Category: Quick Reviews
Emma Roberts, niece of Julia, does a great job in the title role. The film itself is delightful for parents and tweens. It also has repeat value making this a no-brainer purchase if you have a tween in the house. You'll definitely get your money's worth.
Nancy leaves her small town to come to Hollywood with her Dad (Tate Donovan) for a new job but soon learns the tough teens of Hollywood High are a lot to handle. She meets a nice boy (Josh Flitter) and son learns to win over the mean girls and of course, solve a mystery surrounding the death of an old movie star. The film is geared up for modern audiences so the action is fast and frantic at times without being overly frightening. The dialog is intelligent and witty.
This is a great family film and one that's a keeper. It looks like there will be a lot more Nancy Drew films to come until Emma is too old.
