Review

"Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" is a cute story about a magical toy store run by eccentric toy maker (Dustin Hoffman) and his assistant Molly (Natalie Portman). The store is frequented by a young boy named Eric, who has a hard time making friends but is kind of a boy genius. Molly is a musical prodigy who is struggling to finish her concerto for piano. Mr. Magorium hires Mr. Weston (Jason Bateman) to put his affairs in order as he will soon be "leaving". Mr. Weston never has any fun and Eric takes it upon himself to make him his friend. The toy store and toys react strongly to Mr. Magorium's pending departure.
I watched this expecting an adult and kids film but this is entirely for kids under 10. While the store is delightful to watch in many scenes, the whole story line is very predictable and at times hard to swallow as an adult.
Take Molly, who will be given the store by Mr. Magorium. Although she has worked in the store since a teenager and considers it a second home, her reaction is to sell the store once Magorium leaves. Not exactly in character. The only consistent character is Eric, the boy wonder who manages to tell the adults what they need to hear.
The cast performances are a mixed bag; Hoffman plays Magorium as a cross between Willy Wonka and Albert Einstein. Portman's portrayal of Molly is a bit stiff ; a forced performance, and Bateman is pretty good as the staunch accountant who never has any fun.
Picture quality can not be rated as the screener copy Fox sent was absolutely horrible. Sound was decently but unimaginative with effects in the mix. Extras included short featurettes about cast members and the toy store set. A very predictable set of extras.
In summary, unless you have kids under 10, skip this one.

Yet another "Alien" clone, this one features a "crack unit" of cave divers who, upon exploring a newly discovered cave in Romania, get picked off one-by-one by some slimy mutated monsters. Due to a complete lack of characterization, everyone in the film essentially exists to be monster fodder, though those scenes are handled with such sledgehammer editing that, most of the time, we're never exactly sure what's going on when they meet their demise. The story is enormously predictable, the performances simply perfunctory, and with its PG-13 rating, there isn't even enough onscreen bloodshed to make "The Cave" worth watching to all but the most die-hard horror fans. The "Into the Cave" featurette, featuring real-life cave divers who served as consultants, is more interesting than anything in the movie. From Sony Home Entertainment.
