Review

"Mushi-Shi" is a beautifully animated anime series.

“Mushi-Shi” is essentially “Kung-Fu” (minus the action) meets Hayao Miyazaki. The story revolves around a wandering Mushi master who helps villagers that are being plagued by the problematic and supernatural Mushi life-forms. This sixth volume contains episodes 23-26.

“Mushi-Shi” is by no means a flawless show. I personally found that the semi-tedious stories tend to end rather abruptly and that the quiet characters monotone voices had me nodding off at times. Thankfully, however, “Mushi-Shi” makes up for its flaws with some truly haunting, poetic and dreamlike animation. Virtually every frame of “Mushi-Shi” looks like a painting you’d want in your home. From the mist filled forests to the snowy landscapes, it’s near impossible not to be enchanted by the animation.

* The Mushi-Shi Production Tour (38 minutes) contains interviews with various crew members.

* Mike McFarland and Travis Wilingham appear on an audio commentary. Much like the “Death Note” commentary tracks, these two don’t add much as they only work on the English dub versions. They merely express their opinions and guess what certain themes and ideas are being conveyed.
