Do you need proof that documentaries are becoming the best genre of cinema? Then check out the utterly captivating "My Kid Could Paint That."

"My Kid Could Paint That" is a documentary about a young four year old girl named Marla Olmstead who has the special ability to create wonderful paintings. At first, her parents just supported her and never had the desire to show her work , but it eventually blows up into a huge ordeal when the media gets hold of the story. From there on out, Marla becomes a star as her paintings become snatched up for large sums of money. After a "60 Minutes" special, however, the idea that Marla is being helped with her paintings by her father is put out there in the open. Is Marla really a child prodigy? Is her father scamming people? Will we ever find out the truth?

On the surface, "My Kid Could Paint That" is a truly extraordinary story of a possibly brilliant little girl, but there's so much more to this documentary than that. The movie also touches on the dangers of media, parents exploiting their children, and the absurd nature of modern and abstract art. However, one of the more intriguing aspects of the film isn't about art or Marla at all, but rather with director Amir Bar-Lev himself. Throughout the course of making this documentary, we find that Amir goes from believing Marla did the paintings to being uncertain. Sure, Amir and the audience find out that a full length video of Marla completing a painting was made, but what about the other paintings that look more professional? Amir doesn't offer any resolutions as neither he nor anyone but the family knows the truth. Truly fascinating stuff.

Carlos Mencia - No Strings Attached

Category: Quick Reviews
This disc is a huge disappointment. Through his highly amusing weekly series on Comedy Central, I grew to be a fan of Mencia's politically incorrect (though often accurate) observations on society. Which makes me lament this uncensored disc of his stand-up routine.

Movie Quotes

It isn't that I don't like you, Susan,
because after all, in moments of quiet, I'm
strangely drawn toward you; but, well, there
haven't been any quiet moments!
