Review

You'd think that the pairing of Jack Black and "Napoleon Dynamite" director Jared Hess would be a can't-miss venture. And you'd be wrong. This would-be comedy about a cook who tries to save his monastery by becoming a masked pro-wrestler is distressingly unfunny, an uncomfortable mismatch of Black's unbridled antics and Jared's absurdist style. Like "Napoleon Dynamite," the movie's loaded with scenes with no actual punchline, which works well enough if your movie features characters we care about, but everyone from Jack Black on down is a cartoonish buffoon, and many scenes resort to slapstick pratfalls that simply aren't very amusing. Everyone involved tries real hard, but considering the talent before and behind the camera, "Nacho Libre" is a big disappointment. From Paramount.

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit - The Second Year

Category: Quick Reviews
The first spin-off of NBC's successful "Law & Order" franchise isn't as compulsively watchable as the original, but does delve more deeply into its characters. The stories are also often more lurid, intense and depressing, probably appropo since the show is mostly about violent sex crimes. Rapper Ice-T joins the cast for this second season, and holds his own against an impressive ensemble cast. There are many stand-out episodes, but the most morbidly fascinating is "Pique" off disc 3, which features an unnerving performance by guest star Chad Lowe as a rapist-murderer who's been warped from a life-long sexual relationship with his mother (Margot Kidder). All-in-all, this set is an improvement over Season 1, and the show gets even better in later seasons. A decent boxed-set from Universal.
