Review

"Nanking" is a moving and disturbing documentary.

"Nanking" is a documentary about the Japanese invasion of China in 1937. The film contains interviews with Chinese and Japanese survivors as well as stock footage and newsreels which are accompanied by voice overs from actors (such as Woody Harrelson and Mariel Hemingway) whom are reading letters and diaries from Westerners living there at the time.

"Nanking" is an undeniably moving, heartbreaking, and disturbing account of what the Chinese people went through during the horrific invasion. I should warn viewers, however, that this is a hard watch. We hear (and see) inhumane stories about rape, death, and ghastly wounds. It's very much an unflinching account of what took place, but it's an important watch nonetheless. Rarely has there been a film or documentary that has truly shown the unspeakable horrors of war and the atrocities that man can commit. The documentary isn't all about the dark side of war, however, as we also see the strength, bravery, heroism, and kindness that humans possess when facing impossible odds. The tales of survival are nothing short of inspiring.

Extras: Trailers for "Nanking," "Taxi To The Dark Side," "War Dance," "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead," and "In The Shadow Of The Moon."

Roseanne- The Complete Ninth Season

Category: Quick Reviews
In the late 80's/early 90's, I watched "Roseanne" along with the rest of America. While the show delivered its fair share of laughs, the main appeal of "Roseanne" was that it focused on a more realistic American family. However, as the show went on, each season got progressively worse. Not surprisingly, the 9th and final season was an absolute abomination. While I respect the fact that this season contained many personal stories from Roseanne's life, she doesn't seem to realize that the entire season was a slap in the face to fans. Audiences tuned in because they could relate to the characters. Aside from select citizens, no one can relate to Roseanne winning the lottery or encountering terrorists. On top of that, the series finale was utterly disgraceful. I won't reveal what happens out of respect to those who have yet to see it, but it's completely unsatisfying and does not fit the show at all. It feels like more of a tacked on after thought. Thankfully, the season is not without merit. As usual, John Goodman shines in every scene he is in. I couldn't imagine the show working, let alone being a hit without him. Not much in the way of extras aside from 2 featurettes ("A Legacy Of Class" and "Breaking The Sitcom Mold"), 2 trailers for "3rd Rock From The Sun" and "Grounded For Life" and a video commentary on "The Truth Be Told" episode with Roseanne and Michael Fishman (who played D.J.).

Movie Quotes

Now, I want you to remember that no bastard
ever won a war by dying for his country. He
won it by making the other poor dumb bastard
die for his country.
