Review

These original Christmas television shows aired for years every holiday season on network television and I'm sure you can find them again this year on a cable channel. This nifty little package compiles 7 of the best of these shows and ploaces them on three discs in an attractive booklet package. The shows feature stop action animation classics Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Comming To Town and The Little Drummer Boy. Drawn cartoons are Frosty The Snowman and its sequel The Return f Frosty, A Cricket On The Hearth, and Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.With the exception of Magoo, all of these shows were produced by Rankin/Bass. Celebrity hosts and voices from yesteryear include Fred Astaire, Jimmy Durante, Danny and Marlo Thomas, Burl Ives and Jackie Vernon.

Picture quality varies but the drawn animation shows are in better shape than the stop action features. Little Drummer Boy is in the worst shape, with lots of visible dirt and soft focus in some scenes. The shows were digitally remastered but NOT digitally restored.

This package also includes a holiday music cd with classic Burl Ives "Holly Jolly Christmas" and 6 others, including modern artists Jewel and Chicago. All in all, you can find this set on sale at this time of year for a very good price and brings back a lot of fond memories. A good buy on sale and great way to spend part of the CHristmas holiday with the kids.

Lars and the Real Girl

It's a strange thing to find oneself getting emotionally affected by a film about a delusional young man who is in love with a sex doll. Yet, there were more than one moment during my screening of Lars and the Real Girl where the emotion of the film got me a little teary-eyed.

Much of that stems from how the subject matter was treated. The premise is ripe for a thousand dirty jokes and comic mishaps, but Nancy Oliver's Oscar-nominated script is filled with pathos, humanity and the compassion that Lars's friends and family bestow upon him and his new "girlfriend."
