Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer

Review

Stylish, dark and occasionally disturbing, "Perfume" is the story of a young man (Ben Whishaw), with an abnormally acute sense of smell, driven to madness and murder in an effort to capture the essence of a young women, who becomes his object of obsession. The film is longer than it needs to be, and sometimes borders on being pretentious, but it's wonderful to look at and features a terrific cast (including Alan Rickman & Dustin Hoffman in key supporting roles). At the very least, director Tom Tykwer deserves some kudos for adapting a pretty challenging novel for the screen. From Dreamworks.

Blades of Glory

Will Ferrell is easily the most fearless comic actor currently making movies. Unlike his contemporaries, he's willing to do almost anything on screen for a laugh, no matter how bad it makes him look. But unlike most of his fellow SNL alumni, he repeatedly pulls it off. While it's a shame so few movie goers saw his dramatic skills in the criminally neglected "Stranger than Fiction," there's no denying than he's found a niche with sports comedies. "Blades of Glory" isn't quite as consistent as "Talladega Nights," but there are enough belly laughs here to make this disc worth picking up. From Dreamworks.
