Review

"The Pied Piper" is a snooze.

“The Pied Piper” honestly plays more like a lousy stage production of the classic legend than it does a film. In addition to having boring rants and conversations, the direction is both lifeless and distant. Apparently the word close-up doesn’t mean much to director Jacques Demy as nearly every shot is far away.

Sadly, the cast is wasted here as well. John Hurt and Donald Pleasance look bored in every scene they are in. Only Donovan seems to be having fun here, especially when he bursts into song.

Note: This is not a children’s film. It is a very dark and more realistic take on the tale.

The 1.78:1 widescreen picture was horrendous. The print was littered with grain, scratches, and shimmering. To call this a DVD transfer is an insult. As for the audio track, the word “flat” sums it up nicely.

No extras have been included.
