Review

“Total Elimination Absolute” is not one of the best Pride FC discs.

The “Pride FC Total Elimination” event from Japan contains the following matches: Roman Zentsov Vs. Gilbert Yvel, Fabricio Werdum Vs. Alistair Overeem, Minotauro Nogueira Vs. Zuluzinho Martins, Mark Hunt Vs. Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, Josh Barnett Vs. Aleksander Emelianenko, Kazuyuki Fujita Vs. James Thompson, Hidehiko Yoshida Vs. Yosuke Nishijima and Mirko Cro Cop Vs. Ikuhisa Minowa.

Having viewed several great Pride MMA fights, I have to say I was a bit letdown by this disc. You would think that the first round of a tournament would contain some intense fights and a big line-up, but alas there are few major stars here and the great fights are few and far between. The highlights here are the quick, but enjoyable Cro Cop and Minowa fight and the final part of the Roman /Gilbert match. The most admirable fight, however, has to be the match between Mark Hunt and Tsuyoshi Kohsaka. We know what the outcome of the match will be, but the defeated fighter never gave up and went at it until the fight was called. It was actually a rather striking match to watch.

As for the rest of the matches, most of them go on for too long. I honestly just wanted some of them to end. You could tell the crowd in Japan was bored at times as well as they were dead quiet during several matches.

The widescreen picture quality is top notch for a 2 year old sporting event.

The Dolby Digital Stereo track is decent. The announcers clear as are the crowd/background noises.

Extras:

* Extended fighter interviews that run 22 ˝ minutes. The fighters talk about opponents, training, weaknesses, etc.

* 7 minutes of post-fight interviews.

* Fighter walk-ins (5:00).

* Fighter photo montage (3:00).

Ironside-Season Two

Category: Quick Reviews
Raymond Burr's second year as the cantankerous Robert Ironside is another great DVD set from Shout Factory. Burr's acting is just as great as it was on Perry Mason, and so are his supporting cast of Emmy winner Barbara Anderson, Don Galloway, and Don Mitchell. The series addresses some powerful issues that were in the forefront in the early 70s and the shows writers were miles ahead of their time in addressing drug use, abortion, talk show hosts, and crooked cops. The show's cast was allowed to stretch a bit in Season Two as the main characters deal with their own personal lives, with episodes surrounding the other team members. Barbara Anderson, who plays officer Eve Whitfield, left the show after this season to the dismay of many fans.
