Review

This sci-fi, punk-rock, comedy hybrid is one of the best cult films of all time, and easily the best one from the 80s. Filled with outstanding performances by everyone involved (especially Harry Dean Stanton, who's never been better...ditto Emilio Estevez)and some of the most quotable dialogue since "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," "Repo Man" is a must for every serious movie fan. Even so, this edition from Universal (the film's original distributor) doesn't hold a candle to Anchor Bay's now-deleted version from a few years back, which included a comic book and a CD of the original soundtrack (easily one of the best soundtracks ever released). Still, the extras here are pretty good, including commentaries by director Alex Cox, producer Michael Nesmith and a few supporting actors, some interesting featurettes and a profile of Stanton (who manages to come across as sort of a loon). If you don't yet have this hilarious film in your collection, and are unable to track down a copy of the Anchor Bay release (which comes in a really cool tin case), this edition will do nicely.

Gary Dourdan (CSI) stars as militant writer George L Jackson in this American Black Film Festival DVD Series from Warner. The story of Jackson's short life is told from inside the walls of San Quentin and through a series of flashbacks. Jackson ended up in prison as a result of robbing a gas station of $71.00 and spent his remaining years at San Quentin. Because of this injustice and his writings from prison, his brother and others (Angela Davis) stormed a California courthouse and held a judge hostage. Eventually, this became one of the most publicized and galvanizing events of the late 60's. Whether you agree with the politics or not , it is a fascinating look at black attitudes and the emergence of black militarism in this country.

Technically, the disc has lots of problems. Colors are washed out and visible dirt and scratches are apparent in many scenes. Sound is even worse, as most of the dialog is muddied and sounds like it was recorded in an aquarium. The acting, with the exception of Dourdan, is also amateurish. In some scenes, the acting reminded me of the talents used in porn films. Might be an interesting rent but I can not recommend a purchase on this disc.
