Michael Moore's first film brought him to the spotlight of the independent film movement with this powerful documentary about returning to his home town of Flint, Michigan and recording the economic downturn which resulted from General Motors closing down most of its auto plants in the city. Moore goes on a quest to interview and take General Motors chairman Roger Smith back to Flint so he can personally see what the plants closings have resulted in; mainly high crime, stores closing, evictions from homes, and unsuccessful attempts by politicians to build the economy back up. A fast 90 minute film follows Michael as he attempts to enter the GM offices and rejected by security, is snubbed by Smith at an annual stockholders meeting, interviews participants in social affairs in Flint and also locals who have turned to desperate means to survive, including donating plasma, and skinning rabbits. The rabbit gutting scene is not for the squeamish. More message is powerful and thought provoking, with populist humor thrown in. While this film has a strong message to deliver, it tells it with humor and pathos of equal amounts.
