Review

In the late 80's/early 90's, I watched "Roseanne" along with the rest of America. While the show delivered its fair share of laughs, the main appeal of "Roseanne" was that it focused on a more realistic American family. However, as the show went on, each season got progressively worse. Not surprisingly, the 9th and final season was an absolute abomination. While I respect the fact that this season contained many personal stories from Roseanne's life, she doesn't seem to realize that the entire season was a slap in the face to fans. Audiences tuned in because they could relate to the characters. Aside from select citizens, no one can relate to Roseanne winning the lottery or encountering terrorists. On top of that, the series finale was utterly disgraceful. I won't reveal what happens out of respect to those who have yet to see it, but it's completely unsatisfying and does not fit the show at all. It feels like more of a tacked on after thought. Thankfully, the season is not without merit. As usual, John Goodman shines in every scene he is in. I couldn't imagine the show working, let alone being a hit without him. Not much in the way of extras aside from 2 featurettes ("A Legacy Of Class" and "Breaking The Sitcom Mold"), 2 trailers for "3rd Rock From The Sun" and "Grounded For Life" and a video commentary on "The Truth Be Told" episode with Roseanne and Michael Fishman (who played D.J.).

Children Of The Corn [UMD]

Category: Quick Reviews
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Hollywood mined the published works of Stephen King with such reckless abandon that even his short stories were fodder for the big screen. "Children of the Corn," adapted from a story in his "Night Shift" collection, is a prime example of using an author's name to sell movie tickets. Though filmed on-the-cheap, with bad performances and cheesy special effects (even for its time), the movie was successful enough to spawn (so far) six sequels. The story of a travelling couple who happen upon a quiet town in which all the adults have been killed, leaving a batch of snot-nosed, psychotic kiddies to run things (with the help of a monstrous entity in a nearby corn field), would make an intriguing "Twilight Zone" episode. "Children" is needlessly padded out to feature length, and we're subjected to some of the worst child performances ever filmed, particularly by cult-leader Isaac (who'll convince you some kids SHOULD be beaten). Still, the movie has its fans, and there is some unintentional humor to be had here for those inclined. Anchor Bay now offers this corny classic (no pun intended) on UMD for PSP junkies everywhere. *For now, DVD Corner has elected not to assess letter grades to the sound quality of UMDs, since portability is the primary appeal of this new format.
