The logline: A tough high school girl named Brenda gets revenge against a male gang (The Scars) after her mute sister is raped and her friend is killed by them.

“Savage Streets” is by no means a ground breaking revenge film. In fact, it’s fairly straight forward. It’s essentially a female-centric version of a Charles Bronson movie or the Dirty Harry sequel “Sudden Impact”. Everything you’ve come to expect from a revenge film is present here. There’s the sympathetic set-up for the revenge/killing spree, bloody violence, weapons (namely a crossbow), cheesy one-liners, a tough/bad-ass main character, and even some nudity. It’s all mindless entertainment, but it’s entertaining nonetheless.

The highlight of this grungy exploitation flick is Linda Blair of “The Exorcist” fame. True, her acting is certainly corny, but I have to admit that some of her one-liners and action scenes were fun to watch.

The new Hi-Def anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen picture didn’t look cleaned up to me. Granted, the print is decent, but the colors appear faded and there were plenty of dirt specs to boot.

The Dolby Digital Stereo track isn’t too hot. I heard lots of pops and crackles throughout and the 80’s soundtrack is cranked way too high.

Extras:

* There’s not one or two, but three commentary tracks. The first track is with director Danny Steinmann, the second is with producer John Strong and actors Robert Dryer and Johnny Venocur, and the third track is with cinematographer Stephen Posey and actors Sal Landi, Mark, and Robert Dryer. A few BCI moderators also appear on the tracks. None of these commentaries are particularly exciting. There’s some chatter about set experiences, Los Angeles in the 80’s, the soundtrack, careers, hitting on the women in the film, auditioning for roles, etc. There are a lot of quiet spots though.
