All too often, I feel like the creators of most children's entertainment feel like kids will watch just about anything. So, when a DVD like this comes along - one that actually has some substance to it while still being fun and entertaining - I see it as a cause for celebration.

The good people at Scholastic have brought to animated life a handful of beloved children's books, used some celebrity voices to narrate and act out the characters and the result is charming and smartly done. The main goal of this DVD is to help children with their reading skills, as each story is a "read along", meaning there are captions running with each story in hopes of getting viewers to speak the words along or hear the sounds of the words as they read them. It's a simple addition, but one that elevates this DVD from something kids just gape at to something they can engage with.

The stories that were chosen for this disc are great too. The title tale is particularly hilarious as a farmer has a battle of wills with a group of cows who have found an old typewriter in their barn, whose messages send the entire farm into a frenzy. The age old story of Chicken Little is also given a new spin here, thanks in no small part to the chameleonic voice work of Hank Azaria.

Well, there 98 minutes of my life I won't get back. The potentially fun premise of this piece of exploitation sleaze drowns in a sea of self-seriousness, dumb characters, a convoluted story and what must be the most unnecessary sex scene in a movie of this type in recent memory. Star William Miller spends most of the movie wandering the Spanish countryside trying to escape being ripped to shreds by a cybernetic pooch. The fact that he spends a good portion of the second reel completely naked & screaming may be good for a few haurty chuckles, but most will long for Cujo to rise from the dead and tear this computerized canine a new one.
