Review

"Sharkwater" is an insightful and eye-opening documentary.

It’s no secret that countless people across the globe fear sharks and find them to be vicious animals, but in reality, that is not the case. Narrator/star/director/marine biologist Rob Stewart takes viewers on a wild ride as he shows us what sharks are really like and how they are being ruthlessly and illegally hunted.

“Sharkwater” is a documentary with a purpose. In addition to shedding light on how sharks really behave, Rob Stewart also disproves many misconceptions about the animals. For instance, did you know more people are killed by soda machines than sharks each year?

Of course, “Sharkwater” isn’t simply a collection of facts and statistics. At its heart, it’s a documentary that raises awareness about how thousands of sharks are being brutally killed each day for their fins (which are a profitable delicacy used in soups). Even though many conservationists (such as Rob Stewart and the tough Paul Watson) are out there fighting to stop these inhuman acts, they have to contend with big business and even mafia gangs who depend on shark fins.

While it’s depressing and sad to watch and see this crimes take place, one can hope this movie will in some way help others realize that something needs to be done here. Otherwise, sharks will become an endangered or even an extinct species.

The widescreen picture quality is as sharp as can be. The scenes shot underwater are downright breathtaking.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is also quite clear for a documentary. Viewers also have the option of playing the film in French.

Extras:

* Theatrical trailer and TV spots.

* A goofy 11 minute Air Force training film titled “Shark Defense.”

* “Sharkwater: Beneath The Surface” (16:00)- A behind-the-scenes featurette containing interviews and more information about director/star Rob Stewart’s past.

The Roost

Category: Quick Reviews
What a shame for a movie to begin so promisingly as an affectionate spoof of locally-produced late night TV horrorfests (complete with a ghoulish host played by Tom Noonan), only to degenerate into the same type of low-budget crap those same programs used to air every weekend. The so-called movie-within-a-movie, "The Roost," in which vampire bats turn some bland kids into murderous zombies, is played totally straight-faced, without a single whiff of irony or satire. Worse yet, there are literally dozens of scenes in which we expect something to happen, and it never does. The 'movie' is briefly interrupted by Noonan after about an hour, but by this time, we'd forgotten this is supposed to be an homage, and despite the fact Noonan is the only guy in the movie who can act, his sudden re-appearance is throws off any pacing the movie may have had. It's almost as though the powers-that-be saw the final cut of the original "Roost" and thought it was so bad that the Noonan scenes were added to turn the thing into an in-joke. A slow & boring waste of time from Paramount.

Now, I want you to remember that no bastard

die for his country.
