Review

"Shin Chan" is a hilarious adult animated series.

"Shin Chan" season 1 part 1 contains the first 13 episodes of the Japanese anime series that has been dubbed for U.S. viewers. Normally, I (and many others) would have an issue with the dub, but the voice actors are all perfectly cast and make the show even funnier than the original subtitled version. Anyway, for those that don't know, the series revolves around a crude, foul mouthed 5 year old boy named Shin who spends his time worshiping a fictional hero named Action Bastard, doing the Ass Dance, and geneally driving his parents, friends, and teachers mad with embarassing and ofen dumb comments.

If you are a fan of shows like "South Park," you should not hesitate to check out "Shin Chan." The show contains similar vulgar and highly amusing dialogue and characters, and zany identifiable adventures revolving around allowances, crushes, illnesses, jobs, neighbors, family, school, and plenty of bodily functions. Yes, the animation is ghastly, but so what? As long as the show entertains, that's all that should matter.

As I reviewed a screener and not the final product, I could not comment on the audio and video quality. Also, this disc did not contain any extra features, while the set out in stores has a numbe of bonus features

An added note: Funimation sent a screener of 3 episodes from Season 2 including the fast faced "Star Wars" spoof "Shin Wars." When this episode is released on DVD, I highly recommend picking the set up. Fans of the George Lucas Sci-Fi epic will no doubt get a kick out of the references and jabs at the series.

Extras- The Complete First Season

Category: Quick Reviews
"Extras" revolves around a frustrated actor/writer named Andy and his friend Maggie who work as film extras. Much of the show takes place on film sets where Andy and Maggie shoot the breeze and often wind up in trouble with cast/crew members and even some celebrities like Samuel L. Jackson. Like most sitcoms, "Extras" starts out promising enough but quickly becomes formulaic. Each episode is virtually the same. Andy (played by "The Office" star Ricky Gervais) and Maggie work on a film with a big celeb, they complain and spout some witty/sarcastic comments before eventually offending someone's race, religion, sexuality, etc. Only in the last episode ("Patrick Stewart") when Andy makes a deal with the BBC to have his own sitcom does the show start to change. Another problem with the show is that the main characters aren't exactly likeable folks. They are rude, offensive people. Sure, they have many identifiable traits and struggles, but more often than not I was just annoyed by their conversations and actions. Now, I'm not saying the show isn't funny. On the contrary, I find myself laughing several times at seeing Andy's clueless agent or the perverted side of stars like Kate Winslet and Patrick Stewart. I just think it's a shame that the show fell victim to lazy writing. Then again, I haven't seen season two so maybe the show is different? Extra Features-Disc 1: * Ads for HBO shows and "The Office Complete Series." * 3 deleted scenes (one from each of the first 3 episodes). * 10 1/2 minutes of outtakes. Disc 2: * 8 minutes of outtakes. * "Finding Leo" is an amusing featurette in which Ricky Gervais attempts to find a replacement for Jude Law (who dropped out of a role). His replacement idea? To cast Leonardo Dicaprio. * 4 deleted scenes. * "The Difficult 2nd Album" is a 21 minute featurette that talks about "Extras," how Gervais struggled to follow-up "The Office," and a chat about the various celebs who appear on the show. "Extras" is presented in 16:9 widescreen with a 2.0 Stereo track.
