Review

"The Lost World" two disc set contains both the 1925 B&W silent and the 1960 Irwin Allen versions. While the silent version has a flimsy plot set-up and is dated, racist (blackface character) and goofy, it is the better of the two. Unlike Allen's version (which I will get to soon), this is an engaging adventure tale about a Professor leading a group of people to a mysterious land where dinosaurs roam.
From an impressive stop motion dino fight to the climactic Brontosaurus in London sequence, it's hard to deny that this lavish, epic film was ahead of its time. As for the print itself, it is a bit rough looking, but it has been remastered to the best of its ability. I'm just grateful to see that silent films are continuing to be saved. By all accounts, Irwin Allen's "The Lost World" should have been an action packed blockbuster. The production has fancier sets, location shooting, more character conflicts, etc. But even with all of the money that went into this feature film, they couldn't make believable dinosaurs. Instead, the special effects crew dressed up lizards and crocodiles to appear like dinosaurs. Yes, you read that right. As if that weren't enough, Irwin Allen and Charles Bennett's screenplay is bloated and filled with useless subplots about treasure. I can pretty much guarantee that you will lose interest early on. About the only saving grace is the gorgeous 2.35:1 widescreen DeLuxe color picture quality. Extras: Disc 1- "The Lost World" 1960 * Trailer, stills, illustrations, interactive press book and advertising galleries. * Comic book, Fox Movietone news and a 3 minute featurette Disc 2- "The Lost World" 1925 * A trailer and 7 minutes of visual f/x outtakes.
