Review

"Study Hell" is a low, low budget horror flick that revolves around a war veteran teacher who snaps and begins to kill a group of students staying after school for detention. As you can tell from the story synopsis, this film offers nothing new to the horror genre. It's a formulaic slasher plain and simple...and a ghastly one at that. Cringe worthy teen actors, unconvincing war flashbacks, and an agonizing 86 minute running time made me wish that I could be a victim of the teacher as it might be a quick and relatively painless experience (unlike this film). Avoid at all costs. Note: I did not comment on the picture or sound as it was a promo copy. The only extra included is a trailer.

Survival Quest

One of the lesser-known films by director Don Coscarelli, "Survival Quest" is strictly a b-movie variation of "Cliffhanger" or "Deliverance" bolstered by some decent performances by several b-movie stalwarts (such as Lance Henrickson). Like all of Coscarelli's movies, it's well made on a limited budget, but it's not nearly as entertaining as the director's two bonafide classics, "Phantasm" & "Bubba Ho-Tep." An interesting curio from Anchor Bay, but probably only worth checking out by fans of the director.
