Review

Of all the comic strips to be turned into a TV series, The Boondocks, Aaron McGruder's witty and contentious look at race relations in America, has to be the unlikeliest candidate for such an adaptation. Yet, for two seasons, that's precisely what happened, with the good people at Cartoon Network footing the bill.

To be expected the touchy political nature of the original strip was, for the most part, set aside, despite McGruder's involvement in the series, but he has still managed to throw in a few pointed barbs at the establishment throughout. His sharpest attacks are reserved for the entertainment industry, particular the hip-hop scene in the guise of the character Thugnificent.

What detracts from McGruder's caustic storylines though is the rather odd anime-like style that the show has been rendered in. It does capture the blocky look of the comic strip fairly well, but feels inconsistent with overall tone of the series. Still, a few episodes in, and it's easy to overlook the look of the show and sink your teeth into McGruder's incisive wit.

Scooby-Doo 2-Monsters Unleashed

Category: Quick Reviews
Another CGI effort from a big studio and another sequel to a film mostly panned by critics. However, money talks and Scooby Doo 1 was a box office success so we get Scooby Doo 2. CGI dog and company have to unravel who is reanimating the monsters from a museum they are responsible for. Its all good tongue in cheek fun with the original cast and guest stars throughout. I have to hand it to Linda Cardellini, who plays a geeky yet strangely sexy Velma.
