A theatrically trained out of work actor finds work as a professional wrestler. Not only is Andy Schmidt out of his element but he’s also out of his weight class. His wife, Mary, is dragged to New York so the self-important Andy can pursue his life long dream of becoming the world’s next breakout star.

     Schmidt, played by Henry Winkler (“Happy Days”), overacts in school plays, he’s over eager in trying to impress girls and he’s always got a quip for every situation. Which makes him very annoying when he thinks he’s charming. To start, the editing is awkward and out of place and doesn’t quite resemble a coherent story. It’s off-putting and distracts us from the rest of the film. The editing is supposed to be seamless so that when an editor is doing his/her job, we’re supposed to be unaware. In a screenplay where certain plot points usually take their time to unfold, this movie rushes through them willy- nilly; characters fall in love almost instantly in a forced way without any characterization or motivation. We end up wondering why we should care for a narcissistic actor and a beautiful young co-ed.

     Directed by one of my favorite directors, Carl Reiner, sadly cannot save the poorly written, acted and edited movie. My opinion would be to skip this but check out Reiner’s other movies such as The Jerk, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid and Summer School.
