Review

What a shame for a movie to begin so promisingly as an affectionate spoof of locally-produced late night TV horrorfests (complete with a ghoulish host played by Tom Noonan), only to degenerate into the same type of low-budget crap those same programs used to air every weekend. The so-called movie-within-a-movie, "The Roost," in which vampire bats turn some bland kids into murderous zombies, is played totally straight-faced, without a single whiff of irony or satire. Worse yet, there are literally dozens of scenes in which we expect something to happen, and it never does. The 'movie' is briefly interrupted by Noonan after about an hour, but by this time, we'd forgotten this is supposed to be an homage, and despite the fact Noonan is the only guy in the movie who can act, his sudden re-appearance is throws off any pacing the movie may have had. It's almost as though the powers-that-be saw the final cut of the original "Roost" and thought it was so bad that the Noonan scenes were added to turn the thing into an in-joke. A slow & boring waste of time from Paramount.
