Review

Robert Stack stars as Eliot Ness in this early 60's series, "The Untouchables", about a squad of men in the Treasury Department fighting crime in corrupt 1920's Chicago and throughout the nation. The stories take great liberties with the actual cases Ness was involved in but this series is a true classic. Filmed in stark black and white and narrated by Walter Winchell, each episode tells a story of someone involved in crime, both big and small. Sometimes the series would focus on a small time hood or an innocent caught up in the corruption of the era or  the big criminals; Legs Diamond, Frank Nitti (played by Bruce Gordon) and of course, Al Capone, here played by Neville Brand in a two part episode, involving shipping Big Al off the Alcatraz.

Each hour episode is introduced by Winchell and every commercial break brings in another "act" to the teleplay.

The acting roles are a bit stereotypical for the time; most criminals have broken English and many have Italian names. As you watch the shows, you'll recognize a lot of familiar faces; two I spotted were Gavin McLeod (Love Boat, Mary Tyler Moore) and Ryan O'Neal.

The picture on the discs is clean but grainy. The black and white photography is excellent and very noir like , which creates the overall mood of the show. Sound is Dolby mono but is free of hiss or other flaws.

There are no extras on the discs-a real shame.

"The Untouchables" was  hard hitting, stark television for its time and this dvd set is a good representation of the series. I can recommend this highly as a great dramatic show, along with the Season One sets. I wish Paramount would release these in entire Season sets though. They are really milking the fans with these half season sets.

Dave Attell: Captain Miserable

Category: Quick Reviews
The personable Dave Attell, best known for his superb Comedy Central show "Insomniac," returns to standup in this riotous hour long comedy special that was shot in Washington D.C. Among the topics covered in his act are booze, the middle east, soup, women, pot, and other filthy subjects. Sure, Attell can make some offensive jokes, but it's all in good fun. Unlike some downright mean spirited comedians (I won't name names), Attell mocks his own material and always makes sure that the crowd is enjoying themselves. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Attell is the master of delivering crude jokes that will constantly have one cracking up on the floor. Extras: * 10 deleted scenes. The best bit involves Flavor Flav. * "Dave Pollutes A Music Festival" shows Dave on and off stage at Bonnaroo. Nearly 3 minutes long * "Dave's Middle East Tour"- A video diary of Dave's experiences in the middle east. 5 1/2 minutes. * "Dave's Booze Cruise" is 4 minutes of footage from a comedy act. "Captain Miserable" is presented in widescreen with a 2.0 Dolby Surround audio track.
