Review

"TNA: Against All Odds 2008" is a surprisingly decent set of wrestling matches.

The "TNA: Against All Odds 2008" DVD contains 9 matches which include: Kurt Angle Vs. Christian Cage, Abyss Vs. Judas Mesias, the Tag Team Championship Match, Booker T Vs. Robert Roode, Eric Young Vs. Cowboy James Storm, Traci Brooks Vs. Payton Banks, Scott Steiner Vs. Petey Williams, Hardcore Street Fight, and Awesome Kong Vs. ODB.

After a truly pitiful staged match with BG James and his old father fighting AJ Styles and Tomko, the disc improves with some unabashedly fun matches. My personal favorites included Abyss Vs. Judas Mesias and Awesome Kong Vs. ODB. The Abyss fight was shockingly a brutal and bloody barbed wire match. Even if you hate wrestling, you'd be hard pressed not to find yourself on the edge of your seat during this gruesome battle. The Awesome Kong fight was completely staged, yet I got a kick out of seeing the big and powerful Kong throw ODB around while making hilarious facial expressions.

There are actually some extras on a TNA disc! There is a TNA DVD ad, "The Angle Wedding," and an additional match which pits AJ Styles and Tomko against Samoa Joe and Kevin Nash.

Wildboyz - Seasons 3 and 4

"Wildboyz," along with "Viva La Bam," is the heir apparent to MTV's "Jackass," which follows Chris Pontius & Steve-O as they trot the globe looking to perform, more-or-less, the same schtick. But, unlike "Viva" & "Jackass," the show actually has - dare I say it? - some educational value. Sure, the primary focus is on the two stars performing incredibly dumb stunts, such as taunting dangerous animals, eating (and vomiting) totally bizarre cuisine, and willingly getting their asses kicked by martial arts experts or a Russian jockey team. Yeah, the show has more than its share of irresponsible antics & gross-out moments. But despite that, these guys are sort of charming and in a goofy frat-boy sort of way, and each episode offers a lot of facts about the countries they visit. "Wild Kingdom" it ain't, but this 3-disc set is often quite entertaining, and if it helps force that bitter educational pill down the gullets of the young audience it's intended for, is that such a bad thing? Parents of dumb kids who wanted to emulate the antics on "Jackass" may take some comfort in the fact that the stunts performed in "Wildboyz" would be almost impossible to recreate in the back yard...unless you arranged for their transportation. Loaded with fun extras (including commentaries that actually enhance each episode), this is low-brow, but deceptively informative, fun. From Paramount.
