Review

In some small way, I want to respect the makers of Toxic for both dragging Danny Trejo and Tom Sizemore back into the spotlight for a few brief moments and for constructing a movie that does not pander to the viewer but instead demands that you pay attention to the various flashbacks and flash-forwards utilized in a strangely Rashomon-like style.

 

 The rest of me, though, has no respect or energy for a wildly masochistic and sexist movie as this turned out to be. What plot there is to be found here centers on a mentally-disturbed young woman, sent away by her strip club owner dad, and who is now free of her captors and out seeking revenge. The rest of the film weaves some brooding bartenders, prostitutes, strippers, guns for hire and other unsavory characters into the mix, making an unholy mess of characters and storylines that I'm still trying to decipher days later.

What the film really feels like is male fantasy dressed up as high art cinema. All the women are scantily clad, sheepish and available; all the men are tough, yet sensitive and always have the right quip for any given situation. Even the tough women characters in the movie are woefully underwritten and appear to be mostly doe-eyed waifs simply looking for sex (right before the plunge the knife in to you, of course).

It's cotton candy cinema, completely devoid of substance and gone before you realize it, but leaving with an ugly sticky feeling that takes three times as long to wash away as it did to consume.
